Apa yang dinamakan prinsip pada hakekatnya adalah keyakinan dasar
yang diharapkan dilandasi dan melandasi kenyataan, dan ditopang oleh ilmu
filsafat untuk mencapai suatu tujuan tertentu. Adapun filosofi-filosofi dalam
kehidupan olahraga beladiri karate, di antaranya adalah :
1. Karate diawali dengan memberi penghormatan dan diakhiri dengan
penghormatan pula.
Artinya : Jika ingin dihormati orang lain maka harus menghormati orang lain
terlebih dulu. Kepatuhan dan penghormatan adalah hal yang harus
dilakukan setiap orang terhadap orang lain. Sikap hormat terhadap
lawan merupakan hal yang sangat penting dalam tiap peragaan
karate-do. Seorang karate-ka harus mampu menjalankan etika
sopan santun selama latihan maupun pertandingan dimanapun,
kapanpun ia berada dan kepada siapapun.
2. Tak ada serangan pertama dalam karate.
Artinya : Karate merupakan seni bertahan yang damai, tidak akan
menyerang terlebih dulu sebelum diserang. Doktrin “perangilah
dirimu sendiri sebelum memerangi orang lain” berpengaruh pada
teknik dasar dalam beladiri ini, sehingga awal gerakan teknik dasar
selalu dimulai dengan teknik tangkisan terlebih dahulu, baru
kemudian disesuaikan menurut kebutuhan yang akan dilatihkan
pada saat itu.
3. Karate merupakan alat pembantu dalam keadilan.
Artinya : Kekuatan digunakan sebagai pilihan terakhir dimana kemanusiaan
dan keadilan tidak dapat mengatasi, tetapi apabila kepalan
dipergunakan tanpa pertimbangan, maka yang melakukan akan
kehilangan harga diri di hadapan yang lain. Jadi, pakailah cara-cara
yang lebih baik dan lebih bijak untuk mengatasi kebenaran dan

4. Pertama-tama, kontrol dirimu sebelum mengontrol orang lain.
Artinya : Sebelum mengontrol dan membenahi kesalahan orang lain,
karateka wajib mengontrol dan mengendalikan diri lebih dahulu,

Selama berlatih, karate-ka harus memfokuskan pada teknik-teknik
gerakan dan jangan membiarkan pikiran atau matanya berkeliaran.
Tunjukkan rasa hormat dan penghargaan yang tulus terhadap
pelatih dan teman latihan. Jangan berlatih tanpa semangat dan
kesungguhan.

Artinya : Sebelum latihan dimulai, karate-ka harus mempunyai pikiran positif

Artinya : Latihan karate tidak hanya di dojo saja, tetapi juga dapat dilakukan
dan diperagakan kapanpun dan dimanapun kita berada. Ajaran
karate dapat diterapkan melalui sikap, tingkah laku, dan perbuatan
kita sehari-hari, dimulai dari memperlakukan dan menghormati

Myo (rahasia yang tersembunyi).
Artinya : Semakin tekun kita mempelajari ilmu-ilmu karate, maka semakin
banyak kita menemukan ketidaktahuan, kekurangan serta rahasia
yang tersembunyi di dalamnya. Ilmu karate dapat diterapkan tidak
hanya dalam latihan di dojo saja tetapi juga dapat diterapkan dalam

sudah kalah. Menentukan siapa yang menang/kalah bukan
merupakan tujuan akhir/paling tinggi dari belajar seni beladiri karate
melainkan terletak pada kesempurnaan pribadi seseorang.
13.Kemenangan tergantung pada keahlian membedakan titik-titik yang
mudah diserang dan yang tidak.
Artinya : Dalam beladiri karate, teknik dikendalikan sesuai dengan keinginan
karate-ka, diarahkan pada sasaran yang tepat, secara spontan,
jarak yang benar dan waktu (timing) yang tepat, dilancarkan dengan
kekuatan maksimal (terkontrol) dan kesadaran penuh (zanchin) agar
tidak mencederai lawan dan dianggap tidak terhormat. Cari sasaran

keselamatan lawan atau diri sendiri sehingga mudah dikendalikan .
14.Pertarungan didasari bagaimana kita bergerak secara hati-hati dan
tidak (bergerak menurut lawan).
Artinya : Dalam suatu pertarungan karateka harus benar-benar cermat dan
berhati-hati bergerak, melontarkan dan menerima serangan.
Lakukan serangan setiap ada kesempatan, selalu siap untuk
menerima segala perlawanan. Pertimbangkan setiap
langkah/gerakan yang dilakukan, jangan sampai terkecoh dengan
tipuan lawan. Sekali salah bergerak lawan mudah menyerang dan
mengalahkan kita.
15.Berpikirlah bahwa tangan dan kakimu adalah pedang/senjata.
Artinya :Karate merupakan seni beladiri tangan kosong tanpa senjata, tangan
dan kaki dilatih sedemikian rupa sehingga dapat menyerupai
senjata. Dengan latihan keras, teratur, terus menerus, sistematis
dan terprogram akan dapat merubah bagian tubuh menjadi senjata
yang efektif dan berbahaya untuk membunuh. Jadi gunakanlah
secara benar dan berhati-hati.
16.Jika meninggalkan rumah, berpikirlah ada banyak lawan yang menanti.
Tingkah laku/tindakan kita yang mengundang masalah bagi mereka.
Artinya : Kapanpun dan dimanapun berada, hendaknya selalu menjaga
sikapdan tingkah laku kita. Sikap dan tingkah laku yang kurang baik
akan menjadi boomerang bagi diri dan mengundang masalah
dengan yang lain. Bersikaplah wajar, hormati keberadaan orang di
sekitar kita.
17.Pemula harus menguasai postur dan cara berdiri, posisi tubuh yang
alami untuk yang lebih ahli.
Artinya : Untuk menjadi karate-ka yang ahli dan tangguh, perlu berlatih
teknik-teknik dasar karate yang benar dahulu, tahap demi tahap.
Mulailah berlatih dari teknik yang paling dasar, yaitu kuda-kuda yang
baik dan proporsional, karena kuda-kuda merupakan pondasi bagi
teknik di atasnya. Perbaiki postur dan posisi tubuh dalam setiap
melakukan gerakan, bersikaplah wajar, alami (shizen-tai). Karate-ka
pemula akan merasa sulit dan kaku melakukannya, latih dan
rasakan setiap gerakan yang sudah dibenarkan pelatih/yang lebih

18. Berlatih kata adalah satu hal, terlibat pertarungan adalah hal lain.
Artinya : Kata atau jurus, merupakan suatu bentuk latihan resmi teknik dasar:
tangkisan, pukulan, sentakan, atau hentakan dan tendangan, yang
dirangkai sedemikian rupa didalam suatu kesatuan bentuk yang
bulat dan sesuai dengan cara berpikir yang masuk akal (logis).
Di dalam pertarungan, orang berhadapan dan menampilkan teknik-

penuh dan serasi pada waktu yang tepat akan menghasilkan teknik
yang sempurna. Kekuatan akan meningkat dengan bertambahnya
kecepatan. Kecepatan dan tenaga akan bertambah sesuai dalil aksi
dan reaksi. Penampilan karate-ka yang ahli tidak hanya tampak

Artinya : Karate-ka sejati akan menerapkan aturan-aturan dan sumpah
