Banyak cerita beredar tentang asal-usul beladiri Wing Chun, terutama Wing Chun aliran Ip Man.

Many stories circulate about the origins of Wing Chun, especially Ip Man's Wing Chun. Some say it comes from the observations of a martial arts expert girl, when the girl named Wing Chun accidentally saw the fight between a crane and a snake. The battle then inspired him to combine martial arts with the movement of the crane and the snake, so that he had a distinctive feature and became Wing Chun which has been taught from generation to generation to this day.

Although there are many versions, the most popular story begins with a nun (female monk) who fled to Yunnan named Ng Mui. He felt sorry for a girl named Wing Chun who was forced to marry by the gangster chief who controlled the beautiful girl's area. Ng Mui could have just hit the head of the gangster to help Wing Chun, but the risk was too great, which was being tracked down by the Qing soldiers who were aggressively hunting him. Ng Mui thought hard to find a short and effective method to teach the girl martial arts. Long story short after finding an effective way, Wing Chun studied very hard, in order to beat the bigger man and the martial arts expert. When the proposal ceremony arrived, the head gangster was shocked when his idol girl refused his request, which made his temper rise, but it was useless when Wing Chun was able to beat him easily.

Wing Chun finally married, and taught this martial art to her husband. After that, this martial art was passed down from generation to generation by the name of its ancestor, Wing Chun. Not much information can be obtained about the distribution of martial arts from this, but it became increasingly famous during the days of Leung Jan, who was a famous warrior and healer in Fo Shan, who later passed on his knowledge to his son Leung Bik, and his student Chan Wah Sun. These two great students would later become teachers of the Great Grandmaster who would popularize Wing Chun around the world, Ip Man.
