Perbedaan utama dari gaya lain Gosoku - ryu ada yang menganggap mirip dengan Shotokan Karate, tetapi Ini berbeda dari Shotokan dalam hal ini menggabungkan gerakan daya linear dari Shotokan dengan kecepatan dan gerakan melingkar lembut dari Goju Ryu.

Peran ki (pernafasn) sangat diutamakan dalam pertahanan gosoku-ryu. Tenaga pernafasan ini dibangkitkan dengan mengerutkan dan mengencangkan otot-otot
